All About
Jim Corbett

Jim Corbett National Park, located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, is India’s first national park, established in 1936 during the British period as Hailey National Park. It was renamed in 1956 after the hunter and conservationist Jim Corbett, who had played a key role in its creation.

The park was also the first to be included under Project Tiger in 1973, making it an important center for tiger conservation in India. Covering an area of about 520.8 square kilometers, the park features diverse landscapes, including hills, riverine belts, marshy depressions, grasslands, and a large lake, with elevations ranging from 400 to 1,220 meters. It experiences cold winters with sunny days and heavy monsoon rains from July to September.

Rich in biodiversity, nearly 73 percent of the park is covered with dense moist deciduous forests dominated by sal trees, along with haldu, peepal, rohini, and mango, while grasslands make up about 10 percent. In total, the park supports around 617 plant species, 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 species of birds, and 25 reptile species. Famous for its Bengal tigers, the park is also home to elephants, leopards, deer, gharials, and a wide variety of birdlife. Today, it stands as a popular ecotourism destination, though increasing tourist activity poses significant challenges to maintaining its delicate ecological balance.
